Selita Ebanks Partners With Shine On Sierra Leone

I recently learned about the non-profit organization, Shine On Sierra Leone (SOSL), founded by Tiffany Persons.
The organization focuses on building schools, educational programs for children and adults, sustainable development and the Birthright Healthcare program, among others.  The Birthright Healthcare program aims to help reduce infant and mortality rates amongst women during maternal care. In fact, supermodel, Selita Ebanks, launched the healthcare program for SOSL. When the supermodel ambassador was a contestant on Celebrity Apprentice, she won $20,000 and used the total amount to open a maternal ward that will offer free maternal care and postnatal care. Amaazing!
She tells Star magazine, "When you hear 400,000 women die from pregnancy or childbirth, it's almost insane.  I want to build a hospital and help rehabilitate the hospitals there."
I am very proud to say I am from Sierra Leone and it saddens me that many women and children die from unsterile conditions, and the lack of postnatal care or instructions. There are so many different issues relating to this small country in West Africa, and these brutal statistics are a constant reminder of how grateful I am for my birth AND life in the U.S.
You can also help save Sierra Leone's mothers and babies by donating here.

R.I.P. Elizabeth Taylor

Today we mourn the loss of a true fashion icon. Infamous for her many marriages, diamonds, and cleavage, Elizabeth Taylor was absolutely fearless.

"an icon in the absolute truest sense of the word, HAS ENTERED IMMORTALITY. RIP to the most beautiful woman in the world" -Derek Blasberg

Her words define our blog:

"The problem with people who have no vices is that generally, you can be pretty sure that they’re going to have some pretty annoying virtues." – Elizabeth Taylor

Taste of Africa At PSU

Yesterday, I was delighted to attend the African Student Association's "Taste of Africa 2011 Presents Safari Couture" at Pennsylvania State University, Altoona Campus
(my cousin, Sherica, and her best friends Sheila & Nicolette are on ASA's E-board)!
A few of the faculty members played West African rhythm beats via drums and there were many performances by PSU dance groups both African and contemporary inspired. A few singers, poets and skits played parts in the show as well.  The intermission allowed us to inhale a sample taste of many popular African dishes like plantains and joloff rice.
The finale: Safari Couture Fashion Show.
I was really impressed by the many outfits that were modeled. Beautiful!  They were modern, stylish, fun, flirty, and best of all, African!  I had many favorites, some of which can not be shown because of the terrible photo quality.  I will be investing in a more professional camera soon...
Here are some of the "clearest" photos taken...sorry for the quality.

First Day of Spring

The weather down here is a bit nippy for it being the first day of spring. Nonetheless, it was still an easy, breezy Sunday! I went to church and afterward, my aunt and I had a reception-brunch for our birthday days downstairs!

I Need An Escalator

Took some quick pics of my outfit that I wore to an early dinner with friends last week.
We headed to this underground mexican resturant with amazing food at a great price!

Blazer: Vintage, Scarf&Tank: H&M, Necklace: F21, Watch: Nixon, Jeans: Citizens, Shoes: Steve Madden, Sunglasses: Chloe, Bag: Givenchy

The burritos were delish! I dare to say they were even better than chipotle's :D
Of course we had to try their peach margaritas!

Our hearts and prayers go out to all those affected by the natural disaster that took place in Japan last week. God Bless.
